Water for pigeons is very important since you have to make it accessible to them at all times and also to make sure that you keep your loft bone dry as possible.
It has been noted that having a wet or damp loft harbors potential problems like parasites, diseases and virus, and just simply leaving a puddle of pigeon poops!
Drinking Water
Pigeons needs a constant supply of drinking water available to them. After feeding they head straight to the water so make sure a good water supply is available. Some pigeon fanciers uses straight tap water while others uses water treatment to make sure your pigeons are not getting too much flouride in their system. Some people recommend to let the water stand overnight before making it available to the birds.
Watering System
You cannot leave a bowl of water in a pigeon loft or cage and not expect the worst. At first sight of an open water source the pigeons will take advantage of the situation and start bathing on it! Of course this might not happen in the winter months but its like an open invitation for the birds to have a pool party! 🙂
Its recommended to have some sort of cover and just have an area for the pigeon’s beak to reach the water supply. There are a lot of pigeon waterers you can choose from and you are not limited to the pigeons when searching for waterers. Look for chicken waterers as well.
The fun part of keeping pigeons is how to be ingenious in making things with available household materials. A lot of pigeon fanciers have come up with different kinds of waterer. From a simple milk gallon jug to a more elaborate waterer with valves and timers. (will continue later….)
